PEG Feeding Tube — Placement & Care

A PEG feeding tube can be a gentle, life-supporting solution when nutrition by mouth is not enough. We place PEG tubes with care and support you and your caregivers through recovery and everyday tube care at home. Here is what a PEG is, how placement works, and how to look after it confidently.

What Is a PEG, and Who Needs One?

A PEG is a soft, flexible tube placed through the abdominal wall into the stomach using an endoscope.

It provides a reliable route for nutrition, fluids, and medication when eating by
mouth is unsafe or not enough — for example with swallowing difficulty, neurological, or head
and neck conditions. It can be temporary or longer-term.

Placement, Preparation & Recovery

Placement is a short endoscopic procedure (about 20–30 minutes), usually with sedation so you
are comfortable. Many patients go home the same day or the next morning. Some tenderness at the stoma site for a few days afterward is normal and settles quickly.
    • Fasting before the procedure is usually required.
    • Tell your team about all medications, especially blood thinners, and any allergies.
    • Antibiotics may be given beforehand to reduce infection risk.
    • Take things gently at first and follow the guidance you are given.

Caring for the Tube & Feeding

    • Keep the stoma site clean and dry; check daily for redness, swelling or leakage.
    • Flush the tube with water as directed, and before and after feeds and medications.
    • Wash your hands before and after handling the tube or stoma.
    • Use only feeds and medications approved for the tube, per your dietician’s plan.
    • Secure the tube so it is not pulled or snagged.
